Rats

About Rats

Rats are linear, paranoid, suspicious creatures of habit. If you’ve ever seen a rat run along your back fence, it’s more than likely that this is a common pathway for rodents. Rats lay trails of scent along which other rats will follow later.

Rats also like to feel protected, which is why they will run along a fence rather than across your yard. Having poor eyesight, it’s one way that rats feel like they’re going to be safe.

But this behaviour also means that if you’ve had rats once, you will likely get them again as a new generation of rats emerges. Once rat pathways are set down, future rats will follow them once they stumble upon them.

Rats are predictable, but suspicious

Because rats have predictable pathways, it’s easier to set traps and baits where they are most likely to come across them. But rats are highly suspicious creatures. If a new element enters their environment, such as a bait, they will avoid it until is no longer ‘new’.

This is why getting rid of rats can sometimes take a while. They will not immediately approach a bait. They will wait to see if it’s going to be a threat to them in some way, and will only take it when it is no longer unusual to them.

Australia has over 60 species of rat

While there are a lot of rats in Australia, not all of them are introduced, and not all of them are pests. The most common pests are brown or black rats.

If the rat that you see is:

  • active during both day and night
  • fearless around humans
  • a great climber
  • in your roof, in a nest made of insulation, debris or shredded papers
  • eating your rubbish

… then there’s a very good chance that it’s a common black rat. These rats are the kinds that carry disease, and have been around human habitation throughout history.

If the rat’s tail is shorter than its body, then it’s not a black rat but a bush rat.

The other way to tell the common black rat apart from Australian rats is the colour. Black rats are black or light brown, and can be up to 20 cm long. Bush rats often the same colour but they have rounded ears. If you’re trying to find the difference yourself, a better indicator is the size of the rat in proportion with its tail.

Termites

You’ll be prone to termites if you have water pooling or leaking around your house. They need a damp, humid environment.

Rodents

Like most animals, rodents become a problem when you’ve given them a source of food. They’re simply after something to eat.

Cockroaches

Not many people like cockroaches. This might be because cockroaches can infest even the cleanest of houses.

Spiders

If you have common black house spiders, there is a good chance you will soon have white-tail spiders too.

Ants

For really effective ant control, we recommend a program of inspections to monitor and bait further instances.

Fleas

Fleas are becoming less common in households as flea control for cats and dogs is simple and effective.

Birds

Birds are typically an annoyance rather than a danger to you or your property. We will remove them.

Bees

Bees can form swarms. If you annoy them or hurt them, they will sting you. We will remove them.

Flies

But flies are not just annoying. They also carry disease. They will infect your food with disease picked up elsewhere.
