Fleas

About Fleas

Fleas are becoming less common in households, for a very simple reason: Flea control for cats and dogs is simple and effective. When you are proactive about your pet’s potential for contracting fleas, you are simultaneously protecting your house and your family.

Fleas are parasites that live on the blood of other animals. They are six-legged, wingless creatures that are oval-shaped, and can grow up to 8mm in length.

Adult fleas can survive for months without food. When they attack humans, they tend to go for your lower legs and feet. After they’ve fed, female fleas will lay eggs. Once the new fleas emerge from their eggs, they wrap themselves in cocoons. Vibrations like footsteps can encourage fleas to come out of their cocoons, and this is why you can be bitten soon after walking into a house that has been empty for some time.

Fleas carry disease, and worms

Yes, it’s true. Fleas will carry tapeworm larvae, and will transmit it to you when you’re bitten. They can also carry murine typhus, which is a disease most commonly carried by rats. It’s important, if you think you might have fleas in your house, to have a pest inspection as soon as you can. Not only are fleas uncomfortable, but they can make you quite ill.

Your pets are like travelling flea hotels

If you’re not careful, your pets can function like travelling flea incubators. That’s why it’s important for you to really stay on top of flea treatments.

How fleas are treated

The first step in any flea treatment is to treat your pets. If you don’t do this first, then any other pest treatment will be a waste of time. The second step is to clean and vacuum your property. Once those two steps are completed, we will come in and treat your carpets with a fine spray.

Signs of flea infestation

Sometimes fleas are easy to spot, but very often they’re not. Here is where you will learn how to work out whether you have a flea infestation.

Pets will scratch themselves

If you’ve got pets, one of the first signs is that they start to scratch. In this case, you look for them in your pets’ fur, and in their bedding.

They stick to white socks

If you suspect you have fleas, but you don’t have pets - or you have just moved into a new place and just want to check it, take the sock test. What you need to do is put on some white socks that go up past your calves. Then, walk on the carpet. Shuffling along on the carpet to warm it up will encourage any nasties to try and hitch a ride. Fleas are dark in colour, so when they try to get up onto you, you’ll see them on your socks.

‘Black pepper’ sprinkles where there shouldn’t be any

Fleas feed their young on their droppings. It’s politely known as ‘flea dirt’ and it looks like a sprinkling of black pepper. To see if it is from fleas, wet a white tissue or towel and rub it. If it’s flea dirt, you’ll notice small red streaks on your tissue or towel.

You see jumping insects

Fleas are small, fast, and wingless. They get around by jumping. So if you have seen tiny, jumping insects in your carpets, your soft furnishings, or your curtains, there’s a good chance that you have fleas.

What to do if you think you have a flea infestation

The first thing to do is to treat your pets. The second thing to do is to have your house treated for fleas. Read this page to learn more about flea treatment.

Termites

You’ll be prone to termites if you have water pooling or leaking around your house. They need a damp, humid environment.

Rodents

Like most animals, rodents become a problem when you’ve given them a source of food. They’re simply after something to eat.

Cockroaches

Not many people like cockroaches. This might be because cockroaches can infest even the cleanest of houses.

Spiders

If you have common black house spiders, there is a good chance you will soon have white-tail spiders too.

Ants

For really effective ant control, we recommend a program of inspections to monitor and bait further instances.

Fleas

Fleas are becoming less common in households as flea control for cats and dogs is simple and effective.

Birds

Birds are typically an annoyance rather than a danger to you or your property. We will remove them.

Bees

Bees can form swarms. If you annoy them or hurt them, they will sting you. We will remove them.

Flies

But flies are not just annoying. They also carry disease. They will infect your food with disease picked up elsewhere.
