Ants

About Ants

Ants are everywhere. Depending on which source you go to, Australia may have up to 3000 species of ants! In Australia, we have 109 known species of ants, and a whole lot of other uncertain species of ants. And while they are mostly annoying rather than a health risk, there are some species of ants that can cause serious problems for people who are sensitive to their stings.

Most of the time, if ants are problematic, it’s because they are foraging either in your buildings or in your yard. They can be especially problematic for enthusiastic gardeners, because ants will farm aphids. Aphids are a major food source for common ants. Some species can be damaging if they are attracted to the magnetic fields produced by your wiring, in which case they will attack the wires.

In South Australia, we have a range of ants besides the common, black, household ants you’re used to seeing. Ants will come out when it’s warm.

In some regions we also have:

  • Jack Jumper ants, sometimes called `inch ants`
  • Meat ants, typically around sand or gravel areas
  • Bulldog ants, which can be up to 23 mm long

By far though it`s the common household ant that causes the most consternation. They don`t carry diseases but they are annoying!

Is it possible to treat ants?

Treating ants is tricky because the queen ant could be anywhere in your garden, or in a cavity in your buildings. But they have a sensitivity to high mortality rates. This is why treatment is effective for moving them on: If enough of the ants die as a result of your baits, they`ll realise it`s a dangerous place and will go somewhere else.

Controlling ants with the Ant Cafe

Controlling pestilential ants is as simple as putting a plastic device known as an `ant cafe` adjacent to ant trails and infested areas. The ant cafe is like most baits: It is attractive to the ants, which eat it and then die off.

The best control is baiting and monitoring

To really make sure that your ant control is effective, we recommend a program of inspections to monitor and bait further instances. We can help you to understand the risk of future infestations when we come and do a site inspection.

Signs of Ants

The easiest way to know whether you have an ant infestation is by seeing ants. You might not realise that when you have a trail of ants, you’ve had an ant problem for a lot longer than you think you have!

Ants leave pathways

Ants leave trails and pathways into your home. It’s when you see one or two ants that you should be aware that they may be scouts.

Carpenter ants leave behind wood shavings

You will have noticed that many ants leave piles of dirt or sand at the surface. This is indicative of a nest of ants. This is the same behaviour even when they are inside the structure of your house. Carpenter ants, for example, can cause damage to your property. It’s not because they eat wood, but because they nest inside it. They will leave ‘wood shavings’ outside the entrance to the nest. They remove the wood as they burrow into it. It’s a good indication that you have a problem when you discover wood shavings next to your wall, your furniture or your cabinets.

Ants leave piles of other wastes outside their nests

Ants like to have clean nests. They keep them clean by removing waste and rubbish, and putting it outside of their homes. Hence, the piles of grit that indicate where they are. It’s important to note that most ants in Australia won’t damage sound timber. So, if your timber is ok, chances are the grit that ants leave behind is dust rather than an indication of damage.

Termites

You’ll be prone to termites if you have water pooling or leaking around your house. They need a damp, humid environment.

Rodents

Like most animals, rodents become a problem when you’ve given them a source of food. They’re simply after something to eat.

Cockroaches

Not many people like cockroaches. This might be because cockroaches can infest even the cleanest of houses.

Spiders

If you have common black house spiders, there is a good chance you will soon have white-tail spiders too.

Ants

For really effective ant control, we recommend a program of inspections to monitor and bait further instances.

Fleas

Fleas are becoming less common in households as flea control for cats and dogs is simple and effective.

Birds

Birds are typically an annoyance rather than a danger to you or your property. We will remove them.

Bees

Bees can form swarms. If you annoy them or hurt them, they will sting you. We will remove them.

Flies

But flies are not just annoying. They also carry disease. They will infect your food with disease picked up elsewhere.
